AAA, AA and even single A all play to win, regular shifts and the hint of equal ice time doesn't happen until games are decided. If you need to call and berate a coach over ice time then do yourself and more importantly your kid a favor and drop a level.
This is spot on. Only the most delusional parents whine and complain about ice time. Letter chasers that don’t understand the game or development.

My kid has had a letter since U11 AAA, means nothing, it's all about key minutes and not sitting when they drop to 6 forwards and 4 D.

I know parents on our team last season who were complaining, thought their kid had the best shot and should play top minutes, it didn’t happen so they left the team and apparently they do that every year. I feel bad for them

Here is way of thinking of it -

1.do we want the kids with the highest ceiling to go the furthest in hockey ? Should the opportunity not be the same for these kids. Why would you want lesser talented skilled athletes to go far?
2.if you are educated you also know coaches are playing the most mature kids , not necessarily the most talented kids. Why because a less talented mature kid has a huge advantage physically, Vo2 , strength speed and power wise!
3. Kids that watch others play , quit hockey. Also studied and known.

So the big question is , why do we direct our best resources (coaches, time, competition) at many less talented and skilled players that have simply grown early???? You do realize this is why Canada has fallen in the world of hockey!

If this is the case it would mean playing to WIN is really all about the coaches ego not development. Does the game belong to the kids or the coaches ??????

Return the game to the kids it is disgusting!

When you get in to anything higher than local league, you have to understand that while development is still part of the process, the goal for each game is to win. The coach (who is getting paid in a lot of cases) is playing to win. Winning attracts better players and makes families want to play for your organization.

It's up to the coaches to understand their players and where best to play them in critical situations. You wouldn't understand the coaches mindset if you haven't been there before.

The issue with parents is that they are hyper focused on little Johnny and think his one stick check in the first period makes him the best player on the ice. Coaches need to have the birds eye view of the game and take emotions out of decision making.

Coaches make mistakes and there are some bad coaches out there.

Parents need to shoulder some of the blame too as most would rather see their kid play top minutes in all situations on a losing team, than being sat in critical situations on a winning team.

The sport is for kids ….. $$$$ for coaches and uneducated parents should not factor in, it is embarrassing to think like that, it shows you have been indoctrinated into a foolish mindset and it is completely wrong and crushes future prospects! The coach should have ample education to teach the parents who are clueless , that is their job!

And for the record I used to make $250 k per year coaching another sport!

It's not a sport, it's a business. Sorry but it is. I'm on your side though, I think that it should 100% be about the kids, getting better, making lifelong friends, creating memories, etc, etc.

But if we are talking about rep hockey, all of this goes by the way side because it's a business. The associations care about money and winning, in that order. They will talk that it's about the kids but nothing will change until they don't get enough families to pay their outrageous fees.

The nice coaches who try to educate parents and have a development plan in place don't go very far because this always doesn't equate to winning.

The deeper and deeper I get in to minor hockey, the worse it gets and the more broken it is. Hockey Canada needs a hard reset on hockey, to develope our kids better and at a much more reasonable price.
