I am going to come into this from a completely objective point of view. As a long time player, as a parent of a high level player & as a Referee who has officiated for many years at all levels. Before and injury took me out of the game, I was well on my way to actually making a profession out of it. We were trained from a young age in every aspect. TRAINED ALOT...we had on ice weekend clinics, certification clinics, refresher courses and experience working with older officials at higher level games in order to get game experience.Guest wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 12:55 pmWhats funny is that you are under the delusion that anyone cares what you think. And when you post on MHT you're fantasizing that you're ACTUALLY responding to the guy who "missed the easy call" or "cost your kids team the game".Guest wrote: ↑Mon Jan 16, 2023 8:09 amYou sir…..are trash. A ref trying to defend himself and his colleagues while putting down the kids playing. Let me point out that for those hundred kids there are 100 parents forcing them to go and paying for it. You then get on your high horse and go officiate the game thinking your important for a while hour of your day. You then take the money you were paid to do a job…..a job that you did substandard……and you justify it by saying you worked harder than some of the kids. You are a terrible person on top of a terrible ref. You are hockeys problem. A closet a hole who sees hockey as a chance to make his hole shine.Guest wrote: ↑Tue Dec 20, 2022 3:01 pmMost would agree that the players are out of position far more often than the refs and for every lazy ref there are 100 lazy players who can’t be bothered to back check or fly by their responsibility shift after shift. These are the same kids who apparently “practice” to improve…while the refs are out there to make a couple of bucks while supervising a crappy hockey game.Guest wrote: ↑Tue Dec 20, 2022 2:21 pmits not about the calls that refs make...refs make mistakes....its the one that call offside from 10 ft away because they are too lazy to get to the blue line.
its about effort! And this year has been brutal! Dont forget our fees go to paying these guys! Yes i understand there is a shortage and yes I understand refs make mistakes but a lack of effort is inexcusable! If a ref is making a mistake because they were not in position then I have a problem. and its been happening a lot lately. 95% are the older refs...just pure laziness!
9/10 times the officiating is more than adequate for the level of play.![]()
Wake up bud! An opinion from a loser like yourself is as valuable as the bags of sh*t thousands of people toss in the garbage twice a day at their local dog park.
Like I said, 9/10 times the officiating is more than adequate for the level of play.
Referee's are human...they make mistakes....I get it...this is how they learn, how that players learn, how the game gets better as a whole.
I will agree that this is a great part time job that keeps kids busy, while keeping them involved in the game while making a bit of money. It does take a thick skin and certain personality to do it. I above every other parent and fan in the stands understand how the game is seen and interpreted by the officials in the moment of the play. As a matter of fact more often than not I end up defending the refs on a call because how I can see it from their point of view or even how it may have looked from their perspective on the ice. Even often correcting my kid after the game when complains that a penalty he got was BS... when in actual fact it was 100% the right call.
However, this year has taken a whole new level of low quality. I have found that the officials are constantly out of position (which is awful given there is 4 of them now).In the last 3 of my kids games... at least 5 goals have been called back (on both sides) because they are still at the blue line and were not in the position to see it cross the line. Teams have lost when they should have won because of this .They cannot make a single call without taking 5 mins to have a pow wow with the other refs, ultimately deciding to make the safe call and not piss people off. Even the calls that they do make are sometimes non existent penalties (Tripping call when a Player falls in the general vicinity of another one) What's more annoying (from my Ref point of view) is when they call a penalty that should be called, its like they don't know what hand signal to throw up. They seem to call whatever they can remember in the moment. (Hmmm some kid gets smoked from behind...Lets call Tripping)
The officiating has gotten so bad over the last three seasons and this year seems to be the worst yet, I even find my self yelling out of frustration sometimes....which I have never done. I even saw a ref engage in a screaming match with a parent this year, I thought they were gonna go to blows after the game. This was a huge NO NO in my day. The Referee's organization would have suspended you so fast your head would spin. As an appointed official you were accountable for yourself, the integrity of the game and the organization as a whole, and the safety of the kids/players on the ice. You made the call, right or wrong, you owned up to it and you moved on. In doing so you earned the respect of the coaches and players and You learned from it.
Nowadays it seems that they are there to collect a paycheck and live out their power trip fantasies. They don't seem to care anymore.
Of course I am not talking about everyone. There are a good ones out there. But before it was a minority, a few bad apples. Now the bad officials seems to be the majority these days.
It is just sad
