Refs suck in minor hockey
Refs suck in minor hockey
If you sign up to do it, put the same effort calling the game as these kids put into playing it!
Re: Refs suck in minor hockey
I find the younger refs way better. Actually put some effort into it. The older ones don't even bother to skate any more.

The younger refs treat it like a job and have care these older refs think it’s a privilege to have them officiate the game.Guest wrote: ↑Fri Dec 09, 2022 10:35 pm I find the younger refs way better. Actually put some effort into it. The older ones don't even bother to skate any more.

The best refs are the ones that call the games from the blue lines. Re: Refs suck in minor hockey
Unfortunately, refs are in short supply. Shortages all over the province of Ontario and many legacy refs - good or bad handling the majority of games.
Issue is attracting new refs and many being subjected to abuse. Special skill set required and thick skin!

Effort is irrelevant…9 times out of 10 the quality of officiating is superior to the quality of play.Guest wrote: ↑Fri Dec 09, 2022 10:33 pm If you sign up to do it, put the same effort calling the game as these kids put into playing it!
Re: Refs suck in minor hockey
After officiating for close to 20 yrs (and coaching for over 25) I can attest that parents as well as most coaches and some refs have no clue about the rules, game management and base their objections on what they saw during the Leafs game. I am all for going back to what it was 20 yrs ago with the hooks, holds, slashes not being called bc it slowed the game down, removed any skill and was sometimes fun to watch kids try to hit a kid over the glass. Back in the days where you always "evened things up"
I keep telling new/young refs it is a great way to get some exercise, stay involved in the game and make some cash....better than working at McD's but I have yet to see a customer at McD's assume the "Don Cherry stance" (foot on the counter and one hand on the hip the other pointing) and yell to the back "you missed the extra pickles"
PS To all the mothers please do not yell if you have no idea when icing is to be called...just sit there an enjoy your Yeti of red wine

Re: Refs suck in minor hockey
Exactly this. It's a game. Refs are human. They say hockey is a game of mistakes - both players and refs. I was at a game with a youngish ref communicating with the players. It was awesome. It helped the game move. I'm thankful to anyone willing to ref these minor hockey games. I'm even more thankful when a ref throws out coaches who wither abuse them or their players.Guest wrote: ↑Thu Dec 15, 2022 7:02 am After officiating for close to 20 yrs (and coaching for over 25) I can attest that parents as well as most coaches and some refs have no clue about the rules, game management and base their objections on what they saw during the Leafs game. Hearing some of the parents at the rink, it’s seems that the ones who criticize the most know the least about the game. Just sayin.Guest wrote: ↑Wed Dec 14, 2022 11:51 amThe best refs are the ones that call the games from the blue lines.
