Why not move tryout dates to when coaches are announced?
Why not move tryout dates to when coaches are announced?
Years ago Rep hockey tryouts happened in the fall or late August. Now they allegedly happen in April. To get rid of all this birthday skate BS why not allow “official” tryouts after the coaches are officially announced? With open borders it seems plausible to do.

With open borders, tryouts are irrelevantGuest wrote: ↑Fri Feb 28, 2025 11:07 am Years ago Rep hockey tryouts happened in the fall or late August. Now they allegedly happen in April. And stop have tryouts when you only have one spot available & you already know who you want, I know it’s for a cash grab but it’s not ethical.

You can't have tryouts in the middle of February...............Guest wrote: ↑Fri Feb 28, 2025 11:07 am Years ago Rep hockey tryouts happened in the fall or late August. April/May tryouts make the most sense because kids are at their peak. August/September tryouts are tough because kids are still getting used to their new equipment and some haven't skated in 4 months.
Tryouts are a cash grab because coaches know who they want to keep on their current team so at most you will have 5 spots open.

Re: Why not move tryout dates to when coaches are announced?
What AAA or AA Rep kid hasn’t skated in 4 months? And how are they not at their peak in February as opposed to April? A kid could be out of playoffs in March and be off skates for a month then?Guest wrote: ↑Fri Feb 28, 2025 12:16 pmYou can't have tryouts in the middle of February...............Guest wrote: ↑Fri Feb 28, 2025 11:07 am Years ago Rep hockey tryouts happened in the fall or late August. And most equipment now is ready out of the box. Skates are baked and molded to feet, gloves are not made of cowhide anymore…..

Season is in full swing in February. Kids are on the ice 4 times a week. You now want them to fit in tryouts? Everything is done in March so April and May tryouts make sense. Once your team is done, you have time to prepare for tryouts.Guest wrote: ↑Fri Feb 28, 2025 12:38 pmWhat AAA or AA Rep kid hasn’t skated in 4 months? Not all rep kids skate all year round. Maybe most AAA kids do but AA, A, BB, B kids do play other sports in the summer.
Still have to break equipment in.
All I"m saying is that you will see what a kid is really like in April as opposed to August. I've seen teams that get picked in September get burned by picking the wrong kids.
Re: Why not move tryout dates to when coaches are announced?
Well all the birthday skates/tryouts I am hearing about are taking place now… so it would just make it official if you allowed individual associations to hold their tryouts when they want, instead of league mandated and kids could attend multiple tryouts instead of teams having them at same time.Guest wrote: ↑Fri Feb 28, 2025 12:45 pmSeason is in full swing in February. See you at tryouts in April. Stop calling. Lol. Send your kid to TRW. Hear they have Saturday skates every week.

Isn't this the issue with minor hockey? OHF needs to put a stop to all this nonsense. You should be forced to use independent evaluators for all tryouts and the best 17 kids make it. End of story.Guest wrote: ↑Fri Feb 28, 2025 12:58 pmMarlies -FullGuest wrote: ↑Fri Feb 28, 2025 12:51 pmWell all the birthday skates/tryouts I am hearing about are taking place now… so it would just make it official if you allowed individual associations to hold their tryouts when they want, instead of league mandated and kids could attend multiple tryouts instead of teams having them at same time.Guest wrote: ↑Fri Feb 28, 2025 12:45 pmSeason is in full swing in February.
