April/May tryouts make the most sense because kids are at their peak. August/September tryouts are tough because kids are still getting used to their new equipment and some haven't skated in 4 months.

Tryouts are a cash grab because coaches know who they want to keep on their current team so at most you will have 5 spots open.

What AAA or AA Rep kid hasn’t skated in 4 months? And how are they not at their peak in February as opposed to April? A kid could be out of playoffs in March and be off skates for a month then?

And most equipment now is ready out of the box. Skates are baked and molded to feet, gloves are not made of cowhide anymore…..

Season is in full swing in February. Kids are on the ice 4 times a week. You now want them to fit in tryouts? Everything is done in March so April and May tryouts make sense. Once your team is done, you have time to prepare for tryouts.

Not all rep kids skate all year round. Maybe most AAA kids do but AA, A, BB, B kids do play other sports in the summer.

Still have to break equipment in.

All I"m saying is that you will see what a kid is really like in April as opposed to August. I've seen teams that get picked in September get burned by picking the wrong kids.

Well all the birthday skates/tryouts I am hearing about are taking place now… so it would just make it official if you allowed individual associations to hold their tryouts when they want, instead of league mandated and kids could attend multiple tryouts instead of teams having them at same time.
