Talk to me about 'points'

I can see being annoyed if the number of goals your kid got is wrong...or if someone else was given credit for your goals. Things like that should be correct if they are going to be displayed on the internet for the public (!!) When they written down on a piece of paper no one cared...but now that they are often available for any creep to look up online people care.

I once heard a dad say who was mad about wrong points for his kid, well other coaches might be looking at these - about his 9 year old. It's actually funny...but hockey parents (who are often coaches) are crazy so i'm sure someone was looking up the stats for the team.

I just think the point system for kids under 12/13 needs to go. Not everyone should be allowed access to view the points. Some rosters are kept private on winter teams...why should point in random tournaments be available for any creep to look up and judge?

The reason they do it, is because its exactly what MOST of the parents who would put their kid in Spring and Summer tournaments would want. If you are putting your kid in multiple Spring and Summer tournaments (I know some parents who run things through OHP, and they are in a tournament almost every weekend) you probably are the type of person to care about goals and assists your kid gets. If they are going to keep the stats at all, they should be accurate. Yes there are some coaches who will look at it and say "hey I should go recruit this kid". I know I use it to scout the better kids on the team we are playing. Although, it doesn't give much of an advantage honestly, because you figure it out in about 5 minutes typically anyways.

I would rather they didn't do it. But, if they are going to do it, it SHOULD be accurate.

We played in a popular tournament in our area a few weeks ago and thankfully points (or rosters for that matter) were not displayed online for all to see. I think more tournaments should operate this way for youth hockey. During the 'regular' season there isn't a display of points like this...I dont get why it's done for tournaments as young as the mite level. It's actually alarming that this type of info about children isn't kept private.

To be fair, spring and summer teams are the wild wild west. So much sandbagging, and moving of players from one roster to another for "important" games happens.

I wish there was more controls put in place. I think its insane what some teams will do to win.

I am just surprised that anyone thinks it's a good idea for a kids name to be out there on a roster like that with stats. I only realized you could even look things like this up about a year ago (my kids are still young and i'm learning) but wow. I mean I guess there is no privacy with kids identities in many of these tournaments.

Spring/summer hockey is getting stupid. From what I see one to two teams load up a roster with the best players in the area (or beyond!)...then act like they've won the stanley cup when they win the tournament. No one gets better that way. People will hop on a plane for a youth hockey tourney like it's getting in the car.

OK, honestly, this happened all the time when I played, and that was early 1990s. This shit hasn't changed.

When my guy was in house league as a 6 year old there were dads counting 'points' for every kid on the team.

Yes, we're sick in the head, but we've been that way since youth sports was invented.

Agreed. You can't put a "normal" team together any more and expect to not get blown out 15-0. So everyone either stacks their team, or they just assume they are getting obliterated.

I think Canlan and other organizers need to do a better job of having less tournaments or segregating them from each other. I was on a team that should have been AAA/Elite and we joined assuming the division we would be put in. But, when we got the schedule only 4 teams joined the tournament. So we either: Don't play, or play against teams not as good. Turns out 1 team was decent competition, the other two could have been House league teams. It was dumb.

The organizers don't need to publish the names, but they should have more controls to ensure that certain players are "at the level" that you've signed up for. Even adding one "Elite" player to a team full of AA or A players will make a gigantic difference. That kid will skate around everyone and score 10 times in a game.

It is what it is, but its not fun being on the losing side, and its embarrassing being on the side that dominates the other teams.

What did they care if no one was seeing the points? People have gotten crazier for sure.

But this is why many tournaments are becoming a waste of time and money. Will people stop doing them? Probably not because FOMO...but again no one wants to be at a tournament where two teams blow everyone else away...and that's what happens these days. These superstacked teams shorten the bench as well and no one is developing at tournaments. I guess no one care about this...not even the parents.

My son's coach has been putting their team in less tournaments because of the superstacked teams I think. It used to be that people entered in their winter teams to get some practice in throughout the summer...but now there are organized summer hockey teams that are loaded with kids. I again am not sure how this really helps anyone develop or how you can take much measure of how your actual team is going to play in the fall. I've even seen winter teams bring on a ringer from somewhere else for tournaments which can make a big difference. It just really feels like cheating. But no one cares.

My son was asked to play in a tournament, put up 37 points in 6 games at a AA level. However, pretty much every team in the tournament had AAA players and we only blew out 1 team. Good for confidence but he had more fun in higher level tournaments.
