2016 AAA

More than 20 hours of ice during summer. Is this for real? Do parents really think that this much hockey all year around for an 8 year old is normal. Is that much even normal during the season? Sounds a bit excessive. Have not heard of anyone actually doing this but I guess these parents do exist. Just in Spring hockey alone I’ve seen some kids looking burnt out and not playing with the same energy they did in the winter. Burnout is real.

People are stupid. They will end up with highly skilled drill players who skate around pylons but can’t see the ice other than firing pucks at the net. They would be better off playing on the pond, learning creativity and having fun. By 11 these kids will hate hockey and they will quit by 15. Don’t push kids too hard, it will backfire.Guest wrote: ↑Wed Jun 25, 2025 10:34 am More than 20 hours of ice during summer. Is this for real? *Parents are stupid
Spring and Summer hockey all prey on FOMO - focusing 100% on hockey, especially before 10 is dumb, let kids be kids and explore other sports and interests in the summer. A lot probably don't even like playing winter hockey but either they are forced by their dad or feel like they have to do to this to impress their dad.
Hockey would actually be better if there was no spring/summer stuff and it was only kids that actually wanted to be there.
Re: 2016 AAA
Coach sometimes is a reason. Some teams with coach no full time job or major source of income is from hockey. Push hard for small group skates, encourage 20 hours a week for money. Allocate more ice time in game for players whose parents always pay their small group skates.
Re: 2016 AAA
Nuts. But honestly am I surprised? Nope. There are parents who have no clue about athletic development nor have ever played hockey doing this. Heard it out their own mouth how they run from rink to rink. Maybe they are misinformed or being preyed on by skills coaches looking to make quick money. There are some parents where the kid is just not progressing and has almost peaked and they continue to add more drills and frills and the result is still the same. Maybe the orange cones are not working maybe it’s time to get colored cones. But it still has not clicked in.

Spring/Summer hockey isn't bad - people are bad. Idiots will abuse anything. It shouldn't be controversial to say "Kids shouldn't play hockey non-stop all year around."
Spring hockey can be light fun, and a good way to keep their skills sharp.

Re: 2016 AAA
The current best players in this age group don’t play for any of these teams or any of the top 3 teams. You will see why I mean by about decemberGuest wrote: ↑Thu Jun 26, 2025 9:20 amAccording to the original post, if kid want to have career in hockey, they need to play in that team.
