I too live a long way from Aurora and can't stop reading this thread.
It's nice but not really nice, to see other associations have messed up boards as well. Our association has pretty much had the same board for almost 10 years and you basically have to agree with everything they do so that you can be on the board as well. There's no elections and not even advertising to say "come join the board". It's a bunch of volunteers who say it's for the kids but it's really to stroke their own egos. They aren't doing it for the right reasons. We also had some controversy with a volunteer award last year where it was given to a buddy of someone on the board and then this year, that person was given preferential treatment for a coaching position. Again, it's all about who you know, not what you know.
Unfortunately, our board doesn't change because no one wants to take on the responsibility which includes all the crap you have to put up with from the city, parents and other associations. It's easier to just show up to the rink and watch your kids play.
