Parents are going bankrupt keeping up with the 6-7 times a week insanity OR kid is quitting hockey altogether. House League is dead because the gap with Rep and Others is too wide. We all need to push each other to bring hockey to a manageable 3-4 times a week activity. ALL LEVELS. This will bring down costs, bring more equity to levels, increase participation and make the sport accessible to all. Bring this to your Boards.
I agree with Mizz Natasha-Dagwood-Greco aka the Treasurer aka the Righteous on this no summer hockey thang! Too much $$$ and just getting worse some people even talking now about 25 grand to go to Italy next summer it’s craaaazzzzzyyyyyy koo-koo money to spend when your kid is not the best and you just want to flex and fake it!!!

I agree that youth hockey has become 'too much'. The kids who get more ice team all year benefit greatly to those who take a break or 'gasp' participate in another sport or activities. I even see kids who do a sport like baseball or lax still getting loads of ice time to keep up though. The ones who take breaks tend to be not so great, maybe a few exceptions here and there.

The spring summer tournaments have been circuses. I'm shocked at how many people will fly their kids who are under 10 around N. American to get to some of these tourneys after the winter season has ended. I really think social media/internet has a lot to do with it. If you're not there you're not seen and who are you then? No chance of getting your picture on a social media page or your name/points displayed for all to view. There has always been the Brick tournament in July but the amount of other tournaments that have emerged in the spring/summer is nuts -countless CCM and sports illustrated prospects tournaments, HHOF, The Throne, Border wars, Boston Showdown. I could go on and then each geographic location has countless other local tournaments.

There are some parents that seem to think they are high and mighty for doing everything, then others think they are better for taking a break. Sadly it seems like the ones who take the break are having less success than those that don't. Its not that these parents don't have the money either, they are simply trying to be normal and have their kids be well rounded, but the hockey crazies seem to be winning at the moment for not taking time off. I do think the kids will feel it in adulthood with bad hips. But no one thinks about that.

Very well said above. I will continue to do my best at not succumbing to summer hockey, extra skates and flying around chasing tournament teams. Another problem is loyalty to your community team. Too often the top players are plucked away and create this 'super' team. I just don't get why families allow this to happen. The Marlboros started this but it has crept itself down to 6 year olds and Brick Teams. If your kid is the best on the team, work to get the team better, stay with your community team, become a leader, learn loyalty and build competitiveness without 'buying' talent.

yes there are completely separate teams for summer teams now and they often seem to be 'superteams'. I've seen a lot of drama and animosity happen due to summer teams. They often lead to issues on winter teams and people leaving.

It all goes back to everyone to take a stand on sport specialization, costs and summer hockey. Everyone needs to say 'NO'. It doesn't work if a select group of parents say 'No'. The organization, team, boards, and each parent needs to stay committed and say 'NO'.

Unlikely. I am seeing parents post pics of their kids who were 'drafted' for next years coast to coast tournament. I learn of a new tournament every day lately.

Stop all the complaining and just have fun. Make memories. Do whatever makes you happy. My red wine and dock spiders say Hi!
I think it would be better for EVERYONE if somehow it all stopped. But, it never will. The people with money and means will always outspend and "out-time" everyone who is normal and have jobs that aren't as flexible.

It is a story as old as time. Spring and Summer hockey is NOT NEW. Its just more common now.

Next year we are 100% not going to do any "official" spring hockey. Just a couple tournaments spread out through the spring and summer that make sense for us, and our time. Maybe once a week on the ice. (missing a few here and there)

our fall team is starting now, albeit just once a week, but it feels like the season never ended, even though my kid played a whole other rep sport.

oh well, luckily my kid enjoys it. I feel bad for those kids that barely care, or don't even want to play any more. Parents ruined the whole sport for them.
Bullshit! Your kids a pylon

So true! My youngest played way too much in May. Likely the equivalent of my other son’s entire rep season. He was off ice for almost a month. Just went to a practice and loved it. Take breaks so it doesn’t become stale. They need to love the game. Bullying your kid into 6-7 days per week, all year round makes them good at U10 but burnout and quit by U15. Best kid in our area 5 years’ ago is out of AAA and looks like he hates hockey. Not even sure he is playing next year.

Most of my son’s winter team tried out for the same Spring Hockey organization. Unfortunately , this happened in January so we still had months to go as a group. Some made the top team, others made the 2nd team and some got cut altogether. Drama after that was bad for a bit, all caused by bitter parents mind you. Coaches shut it down with an email and a meeting.
