You're talking about a unicorn.

Not going to lie, the coaching certs are absolutely some of the most annoying things to ever do. Repetitive as hell, and if you are a white male, get ready to be told that you are what's wrong with the sport about 300 times.

It was hours on top of hours in length, just from an entry point.

on top of that, you also will get little to no support from the organization. Hopefully you find a good team manager. You will please, at best, 50% of the team no matter what you do.

Best thing you can do is communicate like crazy and hope that people buy in, and aren't complete nut-jobs.

Not cool. Why even bring that up? Truth hurt?

Uh, no.
Ever gone to school? Its called data bias.
if 99% of people in the sport are White Males, then yes, the ones that are issues are going to be white males.

No one said there is anything wrong with other people coaching in the sport - but guess what - I show up to the rink and the only people who volunteered are white males. I guess we should stop volunteering and see who shows up?

If 99% of the people you see in hockey are white males, you need to do a better job of putting you and your kid in more diverse environments. For example, try going to a rink in Scarborough.

There are virtually no coaches who are good at both. I have 3 kids in hockey and there is only 1-2 who are unicorns. they are incredibly skilled, intelligent, punctual, kids love them, organized and deliver on their word. They care about the kids and go over and above what is expected to help the kids get better.

I find a lot of the older coaches lack the skills and looked burnt out, younger ex hockey players are lazy and poor communicators/ poor teachers. Most coaches do this, because they have poor ability to make money other ways. Most are uneducated..it would be interesting to see what coaches have anything passed a high school degree...

So the above poster is correct. I guess I am a "unicorn". I have a master's degree but have thrown in the towel in hockey. The cert programs and unrealistic rules have killed this game. There is no use coaching anymore because of the inherent risk of unsubstantiated complaint and the burden put on coaches at the rink and regulations. So yes you are left with garbage.

seeing as how you mentioned your masters degree. we can assume you are not the "unicorn" as your hockey skills are probably not close to the top.

Having a masters degree means f.uck all. How you relate and communicate with the kids is what matters. some of the smartest people ( at doing tests and assignments) have low EQ and throw word salads at kids expecting comprehension. You need to be able to switch tones, read a kids body language and coach according to their personality.

The tell tale sign of a good coach is how do the kids respond when the coach shows up. you can tell instantly if they are having an impact on the kids or if the kids are fearful/ filled with resentment.

The best coaches are loved by the kids even when they ask them to do really hard things. A good coach would never give up, as a result of parents. I

Sure you did. Not buying it. I have come across only ONE team coach who was also a quality skating and skills coach-ONE. And he was pretty a professional coach who worked 25 years as a Prep school coach, teaching only class at the school.

Private development coaches are far better.
